Bimmertoday posted another interesting German auto manufacturer cross-pollination rumor today, which apparently originated at the Frankfurter Rundschau, one of the leading daily newspapers in Germany. They suggest that BMW might be considering a take-over of the Opel marque. While it might simply be a rumor based on the very visible troubles GM is going through, it would potentially allow BMW relatively easy access to a more diversified mid-market product line and additional expertise in the small car segment (supplementing the MINI brand). In addition, it would gain them access to the alternative fuels work Opel has been engaged in the a number of years now, which could complement BMW’s own efforts in that respect.

We do agree that there are some potential advantages for BMW in picking up a mid-market brand such as Opel, which has a strong reputation for solid small and mid-sized economy cars. It would certainly provide a strong image boost for Opel, and might save it from the sinking ship that is GM. It would certainly be a risky gamble under current market conditions, but could be considered genius should it pay off!
